The Historic Towns Trust is a pioneering charity which researches and investigates how and why settlements developed the way they did in partnership with local historians, geographers and archaeologists. Their atlases and historical maps are part of an international programme used by individuals, schools, universities, and community groups. They support and promote a greater understanding and sharing of our urban past and raise awareness needed for restoration, sympathetic new development and urban regeneration.

Research Background

The British Atlas of Historic Towns Project was established in 1963 as part of a pan-European project to produce atlases of consistent scale and content for the easy comparison of the growth and development of European cities.

The Historic Towns Trust has published seven volumes of the British Historic Towns Atlas and endeavoured to make much of the content and material  (particularly Vols. 1-3) available as a public archive. These include high-quality board folders containing maps, illustrations, a text explaining the history of the town or city, and a gazetteer of the places named on the maps. Our studio developed and produced the Trust's digital online archive of their Atlas Volumes and catalogue of Towns & Cities maps.

Education & Outreach
Building a digital trust library

Despite a rich library of content full of cultural and national heritage, the charity was missing a resource library accessible to audiences and Trust followers. We curated a range of Trust resources to create a publicly accessible digital library which included historical images, educational lectures, research tools and an index of maps and atlases. We also created quizzes and interactive galleries featuring fun facts about the featured towns and cities to engage audiences in the Trust's research.

History of Parliament

Designing and producing digital content and artwork for the History of Parliament's education and research content, outreach campaigns, public engagement competitions as well as promoting their KS3 / 16-18 schools online resources.

The House of Commons 1640-1660: 9 Volumes

Edited by Stephen K. Roberts, this 9-volume work of reference is the most comprehensive and complete study of one of the most turbulent and exciting political periods of British history: the English and British Civil Wars and their aftermath.

The House of Lords 1604-29: 3 Volumes

Based on detailed manuscript research in over 120 archives and including more than 280 biographies, this three volume set edited by Andrew Thrush represents the first scholarly attempt to transform our understanding of early Stuart Parliaments.

creating HISTORICAL TIMELINE
MAPPING A TIMELINE OF THE TRUST'S HISTORY

Prior to the site rebrand, the Trust had no cohesive timeline highlighting the key milestones and figures behind the organisation's achievements. We curated, edited and produced a historical timeline to help contextualise to the public and key stakeholders exactly what made the Trust and their research work so pioneering. This timeline is also adaptable to be updated with the Trust's current and ongoing history, adding to the organisation's legacy for future generations.
